I had been working on a piece about how tone deaf the mobile and telecom billing communities are about media — namely in their concept that media consumption should be reduced to billable events, even though consumer behavior swings the other way. Because the rest of us have already made our decision and are moving on. Sure, some of us Gen-Xers have already tried the alternatives, including piling the family around the laptop for an evening of “The A-Team” re-runs on Hulu and weaning ourselves from the linear television schedule in favor of what we could find on Netflix’s streaming service.

Can Television “Want” Anything?

It’s hard to understand the rhetoric that ascribes human traits to a medium, but writers continue to make assertions about the things that “television” and, more broadly, “video” “want.” The most recent offender is an op-ed piece in the New York Times that asserts that “Television Is Not Free and Does Not Want to Be.” Of course, after clarifying their own inherent bias on the topic of à la carte media pricing, the question the Times should be asking is whether consumers still want to pay for television.
